Understanding the "Maximum resolution" setting as a user #153

Description

@anohren

As a user I could potentially be aware of three ways to customize the resolution of a video sent to the plugin:

  1. Via custom ytdl options in the request
  2. In input stream adaptive's settings
  3. Under plugin settings > Adaptive

Off the top of my head I can't answer which one would actually take effect if both manifest and DASH are enabled.

I open this issue for discussion as there doesn't seem to be any other open issues touching this subject (there's #33 but it it is simply a request for the feature, of which there are three already), and since this setting is not marked "(experimental)". Does anyone have an existing plan or ideas for making it easier to navigate the general feature of resolution selection?

Personally I think these aspects would be appealing eventually:

  • A single max resolution cap that is never exceeded under any circumstances, I.e. it represents what the hardware or network connection (or cellular data plan) can deal with
  • Being able to specify this granularly, I.e. per request, on the remote side. As I understand, this would unfortunately require ISA/Kodi support for the case where we don't build a custom manifest that we can filter ourselves (right?)
