In the function 'drnl_node_labeling', why did you use 'dist_over_2, dist_mod_2 = dist // 2, dist % 2'? What role does it play in the label 'z'?

I know it is the code for Eq.10. I want to know the reason you used the kind of hash, or what is the advantage of the kind of 'closed-form computations' ? What if we remove the third term in Eq.10?
