IDA 9.2 crash when exiting IDA (only with this plugin installed and no crash when plugin is removed)

When I start IDA with Ipyida I get the message:
A known critical bug in PySide6 6.8.0 will cause your application to crash. See https://github.com/spyder-ide/qtpy/issues/494

When I exit IDA 9.2, it crashes.

When running without this plugin, IDA works as expected

Running Windows 10, Python 3.10.5 (installed by IDA installer) with PySide 6.8.0 (installed by IDA installer)

Regarding the warning, IDA ships with PySide6 and there's nothing I can do to update it unfortunately. However this particular problem should happen only when the plugin is loaded, and I've never seen it happened so I think we are "safe" from this bug.

However, it should not crash on exit, so there's some bug or conflict here. Previous edits of the issue description show PySide6 was also installed at some point, which may cause problems with the PySide6 library shipped with IDA. If it's not already done I'd try to uninstall it from IDA's Python environment to avoid loading any other version.

If you have some more information about the crash like stacktrace, memory map or a crash dump, I have a look see if I find anything that would explain the crash.

After I got the error, I did run pip install --upgrade PySide6 but that version that pip installed was not picked up by IDA.
I opened IDA and ran import PySide6 and then PySide6.__version__ which gave me version 6.8.0

I'd still uninstall it because some submodules such as PySide6.QtPrintSupport are in the package but not with in IDA's PySide6, so it may try to import it which may cause some unintended behavior.

Yes, they where only there a short time during testing but it is the same problem before and after. I also updated to the latest MS redistributable but that did not help. I will try to get out a debugger during the weekend.

We can reproduce the problem without any extra packages installed (only those required by ipyida), so the problem definitely exists in the PySide6 build shipped with 9.2. I suspect the issue triggered even when plugin is not invoked explicitly because ida_plugin.py starts with:
from PyQt5.QtWidgets import QApplication
which unconditionally triggers loading of PySide6 via PyQt5 shims.
IMO this import should be done on-demand, and ideally converted to Pyside6 so the plugin works even in case of IDAPYTHON_USE_PYQT5_SHIM = 0.

Thanks for checking Igor! I completely missed that import of PyQt5 🤦 . Some else also spotted it yesterday. I'll fix this and make a release later today.

I'll find a Windows box to test it too, because that problem doesn't show up on macOS.

It seems to be most prevalent on Windows but we've also got a report on Linux.

I have the same issue on Linux.
I tried to upgrade PySide6 to 6.8.0.2 but that causes an ImportError on PySide6.QtCore (Unresolved C++ Symbol).
I sent a bug report to Hex Rays, I'll post an update once they respond.

I've released v2.3 which won't try importing PyQt5.

However, I was not able to reproduce the crash, even on Windows :( and IPyIDA 2.2. I'm crossing fingers this will remove the crash.

Still getting a segmentation fault on Linux on commit 834199e0039b0ee2fa323ed83763bbee4200ca10 with IDA 9.2 and Python 3.12.11.
To be clear, I don't think you can do anything about it because examining the stack trace shows that _PyObj_Free in libpython3.12.so causes the crash. The call to _PyObj_Free comes from libpyside6.abi3.so.6.8 that's distributed with IDA.
