MATLAB fails to launch inside Vivado

MATLAB fails to launch when called inside ip_prototype_test and soc_prototype_test when run on Ubuntu and Fedora. Specifically, it gives the error: "Internal error 2: Could not determine the path of the MATLAB root directory."

This issue seems to be related to the use of LD_LIBRARY_PATH by Vivado. Vivado sets this to point to some included libraries that it needs, and then when MATLAB is called from inside Vivado it is forced to also use those libraries. These libraries cause the MATLAB loader script to produce the error:
awk: undefined symbol: mpfr_z_sub

To fix this, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable should be cleared before calling MATLAB.
