option to disable workspace switcher

What Happened?

I've got a background app thing for every window in every workspace:

Steps to Reproduce

Open anything

Expected Behavior

No background apps. Is there a way to disable the feature entirely? Every time it's appeared has been unnecessary

8.x (Circe)

amd64 (on most hardwares)

Classic Session (X11, This is the default)

Oh, are these workspaces? It looks like that was released May 12th but I haven't had them until rebooting this morning. I'd still like to be able to disable it

One of the problems with an option to disable the workspace switcher is that we're about to use it in Multitasking View as well. So you'd either lose it there too (probably not the right thing to do), or we have to hide and show it whenever you go into multitasking view (which is potentially a lot of content to reveal and the animation will probably not look good)

Ah interesting, I didn't know the multitasking view would be getting a refresh! I don't really use it since I have the keyboard shortcuts memorized but can see why it'd be useful. Maybe an option to collapse them to save space, at the risk of making boxes of boxes of boxes? 😆 It could have a fancy accordion-ish animation or something for workspace view

I'll leave it open for now since I've seen a couple other folks ask for an option to disable it. Let's gather some more discussion and see how it plays out :)

I agree. There should be an option disable both showing the workspaces as well as the add workspace icons in the Dock.

As someone who never uses more than one workspace these features aren't necessary.

I think that might be a little antithetical to the design here. Part of the goal is to transition folks to workspaces who have been using things like tweaks to try to get minimize back. So folks who aren't yet using workspaces is the number 1 type of person we want to show this UI to
