Pull request migrating to argparse welcome?

I'm surprised to see use of optparse here. I'd make a pull request migrating to argparse if it has a chance to be accepted. What do you think?

@hartwork sorry for the slow reply; I'd happily merge such a migration if I can be confident it's been tested carefully, but it's not a priority.
