Description
Research: Gemini Extensions adoption and ecosystem
Questions
- How prevalent are Gemini Extensions in the wild? Check Google's own marketplace/documentation for what's available.
- Search GitHub for repos using Gemini Extensions — how many, who's publishing them, what do they do?
- Are any major players (large orgs, well-known developers) publishing Gemini Extensions?
- How does the Gemini Extensions ecosystem compare in maturity to Claude Code plugins and the vercel-labs/skills ecosystem?
- What's the format — is it SKILL.md-based (agentskills.io standard) or something Google-specific?
Approach
Use GitHub search via gh CLI and APIs to find repos with Gemini extension/skill patterns. Look for .gemini/ directories, Gemini-specific SKILL.md files, and Gemini Extensions marketplace listings.
Related
This research could be served by a broader skill or tool that tracks major developers on GitHub and checks their repos for adoption of specific patterns (skills, extensions, plugins, MCP servers). That would be useful beyond just this question — filed separately as a skill idea.
Additional research
- Check if anyone is building skills or extensions for Antigravity (Gemini's agent framework). Search GitHub for antigravity skill patterns,
.gemini/antigravity/directories.
