Is there a way to generalize ellipse() to handle bivariate $t$ distributions?

Not really, but ellipse() is generic, so it's theoretically possible. You would need to do all the calculations yourself. You should be careful, I think there are at least two different definitions of the bivariate t. Duncan Murdoch
