Following the Schedule draft, this is a 1-hour, non-technical module about Ethics in AI.
The ADC already has an Ethics in ML module for its scalable computing course. The latest iteration of this module (updated in March 2024) includes an expanded ethics in ML section with an overview of the FAST principles for ethical development of AI projects. My goal in developing this new subsection for the scalable computing course was to present a framework that could be easily remembered, similar to FAIR and CARE, and to include more real-world examples. This is the section that is currently up in the draft course materials.

For text-heavy documents for which in-line comments and edits from collaborators are useful, I find it useful to use Google Docs instead of GitHub. So the draft for the AI Ethics Module is already on Ethics in ML draft.

Recommendations for next steps

• Update the Ethics in ML draft examples to others that are relevant to ethics in AI applied to Arctic research, if possible. Also, update any examples that the group might now find as compelling.

Merging this with ADC’s Data Ethics module:

• Remove the comic strip at the beginning of the ADC lesson: it implies this is a boring subject.

• Make FAIR and CARE principles their own sections, so the lesson has three sections: (1) FAIR, (2) CARE, and (3) FAST.

• Consider cutting out the Ethics at the Arctic Data Center section (too long for a 1-hour module). It can always be included as a reference.
