Challenge July 26

I finished the July 26 challenge but after I looked at some of the other solutions such as..

I noticed pretty much everyone in the top solutions is using the exact same tactic to solve the challenge. What exactly is going on here? Give me some hints atleast. I can see basically whats happening but I don't understand the reasoning or direction of this sort of CSS. Anyone want to help me? Thanks in advance

Thank you for your reply, Yes I get that it is code golfing and I understand what the goal is (as few characters as possible). I guess what I should have specified is why the use of multiple * and how they are never closed with curly brackets{}. Plus multiple declarations of color on this * selector. It seems like they are overwriting the previous color. Hmm I can see the trick but not sure why it works

it is nesting and the last rule wins, but mostly only on chrome. Is not valid css but works here. Same for the last closing bracket.
for example, if you have an gradient in your code, move it to the last line and you can skip the closing parentheses
p{color:#000;linear-gradient(red 50px,white 0
this will work

This is for shortening the code

* <- margin for everything
9q <- q = quarter-millimeters. is shorter then 10px (2 char)
margin:-15-75-60 <- you don't need units for margin (at css battle) and if you have negative values, you can skip the blank between
