Also, dummy question. From a hello_world.c, how do I generate a dwarf/elf file?

If I remember correctly the Dwarf standard is backwards compatible. So I wouldn't be surprised if all Dwarf2 features "just worked". But obviously not any of the new ones.

Your linker will by default output an elf file. Unless you turn off debug info it should be included I believe.

yes. it works for other dwarfs, but the format between those are different. With that, when you try to parse the dwarf5 using this code, it will crash or will not translate the code correctly.

Can you supply me with an example ELF file with DWARF5? I'm currently migrating this codebase to .NET5 so I might as well have a look.

Attached you can find a hello world using -g -g-dwarf-5 (i think those are the flags). Also used -Wall and -O2
