Save Full Flash last moment failure & resolution

hi i was having issues with the device backup read failing last second but was able to resolve it by setting the device to not sleep or shutdown ever, can we add this to some debug/tip in the readme or something.

I am experiencing the same problem, but setting the "Sleep Time" and "Power-off Timer" to "Never" did not solve my issue.
When trying to save a full flash, it seems to be having trouble reading the last few bytes. The progress bar shows 100% (16,777,196 / 16,777,216), it will sit there for a bit of time, and then it errors out; "No serial data received."
It happened with Edge, as well.

I received my X4 on 3 Feb, 2026.
It came with (and I am currently running) V3.1.1
OS: Win 10
Browser: Google Chrome - Version 143.0.7499.193 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Browser: Edge - Version 144.0.3719.104 (Official build) (64-bit)

I'm having the same issue, but it's only reaching about 26% for me. I've set the auto sleep & power off to never, and each time I try the Save full flash it fails at the same point with "No serial data received."

Same specs & details as above except I got mine Feb 6, 2026 and I'm on Windows 11

I was able to give it another shot this morning and after a few attempts it was successful. I didn't change any settings, but I did reboot my PC before the successful attempt. Maybe it's an intermittent issue? Just keep trying, I guess...
But, I was able to flash Crosspoint 0.16.0 to it without any problems.

Definitely worth a shot to reboot and try again. I'll report back if it works for me too.

EDIT: Rebooted & tried a couple more times without success again. I tried different USB-C plugs and different ports on the computer without success. I'll try one more time and see if anything shows up in the inspector console.

my issue was almost exactly like this. same major OS and browser versions. it could've also just been the retry that fixed it as the second time I kept interacting with it to keep it awake and it still failed.

Got my X4 an hour ago, having the same issue.
The device was frozen after the first attempt at saving the full flash.
Trying again now. It's a shame that it takes so long to find out if it's succeeded or failed.

I wonder if this could this be done in chunks, so you only have to retry the failed chunk? 5 mins instead of 25 would be nice.

Edit: Still no Joy.

Closing Edge allowed me to remove the device, but it's still frozen (the battery icon says it's charging, none of the buttons work etc.)

I have been using a powered USB 3 hub, which probably isn't ideal, but it works with my very fussy Kobo Aura One, so... Trying a different cable for now to see how it goes.

Edit 2: Still no joy.

Using USBDeview, I noticed that the x4 disappeared from the list of connected devices at some point (I don't know how long that took) while it was just connected to my pc but doing nothing, so I changed the settings for Sleep Time and Power-off Timer to Never and let it sit for 20 mins.

It has not disappeared from USBDeview in that time, so... here we go again.

Edit 4: Tried front panel USB port and rear USB port. Still no joy.

Save yourself hours of pain...

Basic overview.....

• Connect the X4 to your PC

• Open PowerShell and run these commands (one after the other) *presuming your X4 is automatically on COM3

winget install Python.Python.3.12

pip install esptool

esptool --port COM3 read_flash 0x0 0x400000 xteink_x4_firmware.bin

If needed, open Device Manager, look under Ports (COM & LPT) for a new entry "USB JATG / Serial debug unit".

Note the COM port number and edit the above command accordingly.

This will only take a few minutes. The firmware file will be saved in whatever directory your PowerShell session is currently in (usually C:\Users\YourName). It should be 4MB (4,096 KB)

Head back to https://xteink.dve.al/

Click Flash CrossPoint firmware.

All done in 5 mins 🙄

download espotool

uv tool install esptool

list yer devices

ls /dev/cu.*

get the name of your device (i.e. /dev/cu.usbserial-XXXXX) and flash

uvx esptool --port /dev/cu.usbserial-XXXXX read_flash 0x0 0x400000 ~/Downloads/xteink_x4_old_firmware.bin

Just to add, to perform a FULL BACKUP (16MB), you must modify it as follows:

esptool --port COM3 read_flash 0x0 0x1000000 xteink_x4_firmware.bin
