We need a way to insert entries inline, like a Link, but we need the link body to display the embed twig, preferably in a span.
This is for inline entries that need tooltips of the related entry but the link needs to be inline with the paragraph, and they need code rendered on them in the front end. The use cases are currently glossary terms and variables, as well as for normal entry Links so that the Linked entry always displayed the current title text, instead of the Link keeping whatever the contents of the a tag were set when the link was created.
By default it could display the inline entry's Title field in a span, like a mini card, which is how other CCMS's handle this, and with a dropdown to select Insert Entry and Insert Inline Entry:
Being able to insert an existing entry instead of an embedded entry would help this use case, as well, as otherwise we have to create an Entry field on the inserted inline entry to link to the related entry to render, meaning 2x the entries created.
Normal a href links don't work well for this because we have to gather all of the links and then re-query for those entries later, or load in all of the external entries for every page.
Here's how we display glossary term links (with link tooltips) in various displays (pdf, web, mobile). Currently we're making a second graphql query for all of the glossary terms. Likewise, variables are also underlined in preview mode but render as normal text in production:
