General approach to determining day

I was wondering what the approach to identifying the day directory has been previously? Right now, the day directory is just the date, i.e. with no identifying marking in front. Did it use to be e.g. day20170714? The way that I've started doing this now is to call a directory a 'day' level if it contains only numbers.
