the meaning of "gemination"

In a reading session today, we had the word "sattva". The manuscripts unanimously read "satva". The Saktumiva filter "filter geminated t" does the right thing. We can have "sattva" in the edition and the MS readings are suppressed.

However, Andrey Klebanov rightly pointed out that "sattva" isn't a case of gemination. It's not like "karttā". It's a compound: sat+tva.

Do we care? Perhaps not. The filter does what we want. I just thought I'd mention it.

I think from grammatical viewpoint, gemination happens only after 'r'.

So, functionality should remove only try to match "rxx" with "rx" where x is a consonant.

This will take care of sattva (no normalization case) and correctly normalize karttA and kartA.

Hmm yeah, now that I'm working with other languages, like Pali and Tamil, there are also different situations where gemination occurs. I wonder if "gemination before r" should be a separate case from other common cases, like sattva/satva in Sanskrit, or bhadanta/bhaddanta in Pali.

I think it probably should be separate. I mean only fusspots will really care, but karmma and satva are technically quite different phonological phenomena.
