Is there a way to suppress page numbers on specific pages?

I'm trying to set up a flip book that has an unnumbered first page behind the cover. I've been digging through the code, but I haven't quite figured out how to suppress the page number on that page. I also need to be able to suppress page numbers on other individual pages. The sequence of page numbers should not be disturbed, i.e., if page 41 needs to be shown with no page number then the next page should show 42 as its page number.
