About edit the template svg

Hello, I liked this project very much. I was doing some changes to include it into the Chamilo LMS (GPL) but when I try to modify the SVG in Inkscape, even without changing the object IDs, a series of things stop working (like the color change for example). Is there a special SVG editor I should be using, or how do you recommend I modify the SVG to suit my needs?
