Just a question. Wouldn't it be better to have it in the highest available format instead for preservation?

I personally would prefer to not download all videos that i would download with this tool (for preservation reasons) in the hightes format - to use less space on disk.

So i would like to ask, would it be possible to have a config file where one could set which quality of the video one wants and also, would it be possible to have a setting that let's one turn off and on conversion into another format from mp4 (if thats the format gotten from youtube)?

Also, would it be possible to add a function that let's one choose to download automatically the video or only the audio track of the video? This way, songs could be backed up from youtube-videos sort-of in bulk.

conversion is needed because on a mac I want to be able to open them in quicktime and final cut pro. The mp4 format youtube uses isn't something quicktime can open.

The default is .mov but there is a --format option you can pass in mkv which will play in VLC

Yeah I think we can add a bunch of config options like audio vs video etc. Good idea!

There is already a little HTML view started in the firefox extension. MIght be a good place to add the options. Another thing people might want is control over how to name the files. I like using just the youtube video id as the filename. But others might want something more descriptive.

Thanks for explaining the reason for the conversion to .mov. I have another question: Is quicktime shipping by default with any Mac usually? And do you know, is there a way to play .mp4 on Mac with VLC?

Regarding naming the files, did you mean with YouTube video ID the sort-of cryptic part that's the part of the URL of the video after "watch?v=" ?

I'd like to propose the standard naming as the name of the video (its title), followed by the part after "watch?v=" in the URL of a given video. This way, it's the name and a sort-of description of where the video was downloaded from.

In addition, I'd like to propose to put two dashes ("--") in the filename between the name and the part after "watch?v=" in the URL of a given video.

yes, quicktime comes with any mac. And all the video editing software like final cut pro use that format.

Oh sure, VLC is made for all 3 platforms and will play any video format.

Yeah, the default name for videos from yt-dlp is what you are describing. But I hate dealing with those long names with spaces. I'll make it a config option.
