At somepoint NHTSA added a recall endpoint https://api.nhtsa.gov/vehicles/byYmmt?data=crashtestratings,safetyfeatures,recommendedfeatures,recalls&modelYear=2020&make=CHEVROLET&model=CORVETTE&trim=C&series=RWD&name=&max=25

Which returns substantially more information, including a preview of the vehicle.
