backup before you go

The application actually converts my plain text yaml files into smtg like
    topic: 
      faq: 
        title: !binary |
          0JzQtdC20LTRgyDQv9GA0L7Rh9C40Lw=

and crashes, not being able to invoke nil.each_pair, which I see as not very useful behaviour.
