Firefox and GIMP automatic theming doesn't recognize shell theme from Rewaita

Been loving this so far. It's absolutely excellent and has been all that i have been missing from Gnome. Libreoffice works with the theme just fine too despite not being a core gnome program. However i notice that Gimp and Firefox does not work with this. You could make a theme manually with firefox colour of course but regardless.

I'm well aware of the issue with Firefox, the only reason why it isn't added is because I can't figure out how to make it comply. Unlike normal gtk3 apps, Firefox doesn't pull the theme from ~/.config/gtk-3.0, and relies on the 'legacy application' setting from Gnome Tweaks.

If you take the files from ~/.config/gtk-3.0 and put them into a proper theme folder, then set that as the 'legacy application' theme, Firefox will obey some parts like the text colour. If you are curious as to why I don't do that, it is for Flatpak reasons.

As for GIMP, I think it does theming on its own. I got it to look integrated by just setting the theme to 'system':

I see. Is there any chance of the people on GIMP's side wanting to cooperate on this? GIMP has never been easy to theme.

I'm also interested in theming Firefox/Thunderbird, I tried making userChrome/userContent, technically it should be possible but I don't understand the css structure of the apps so I couldn't. If they get their accent color from the gtk3 theme, ignoring .config, maybe Adwaita or adw-gtk3 can be cloned locally, with the color scheme altered.

As I've said before, Firefox doesn't read its theme from .config, instead it pulls from the 'legacy application' setting. As far as I know, Firefox (and maybe Chrome) are the only apps that do this.

I know how to set up Flatpak to write to that those kinds of settings, but it gets really messy, and can break other settings apps.

I would love to add automatic integration with Firefox Gnome Theme, which would kind of eliminate this whole problem. The only issue is that Flatpak gets in the way.

For example, Add Water had to jump through some hoops.

Firefox Gnome Theme supports customChrome/customContent implementation, but you have to theme every css element manually, I think. And it doesn't work for Thunderbird. Otherwise having a custom gtk3 theme would do it - like detecting if the user has adw-gtk3 installed, copy its content into a new theme like rewaita-gtk3, and apply edits there, prompting the user to switch to that theme. Only it would have to rerun in order to update the theme.

I currently just want to change the accent color, but turned out Adw-gtk3 stopped having a fixed accent in favor of integration with Gnome settings accents, at least for Firefox. I tried cloning the theme and setting accent in the gtk3 css, but it didn't work. I don't know where else could it be defined.

Hello again, after a lot of struggling, I figured it out - Firefox and Thunderbird detect if the theme name has adw-gtk3 or maybe adwaita or adw in it, and automatically switch to GNOME colors. I just copied adw-gtk3, renamed it to "test", and .config overrides started to work, I believe, as I got my custom accent color. Who would have thought?
