README.md enhancements

README.md could use enhancements such as:
* [ ] proper explanation of what a miner is (including illustrations)
* [ ] more conventions (eg. placement of additional files for miners)
* [ ] consistency check (are we still using the same API?)
  * [ ] validity of links
  * [ ] code examples
