Performing an action in select mode doesn't return you to normal mode

1. I enter select mode with v
2. I highlight some text
3. I delete it with d
4. I remain in select mode

What should happen

1. I enter select mode with v
2. I highlight some text
3. I delete it with d
4. I am automatically in visual mode
