I'm unclear on how your functions would insert and extract the Hamming parity bits as I can't work out the distribution of them. At the top level, is an 8 bit byte assembled into a 12 bit word with space in bits 0, 1, 2 & 4 for the 4 parity bits to be added after calculation or are the parity bits appended to the original 8 bits. I'm even more confused about the decode side :(

An example that dealt with encoding and decoding a short stream of data (say 8-10 bytes) would be great!!
