[TASK] Worldbuilding: Let's Map It Out #72

TASK ONE: ISLAND MAP

As we are about to come to some conclusions on writing style, and features are starting to be added into the engine quite quickly, we need to start actually making our world. This is a task, not just a discussion. We are going to start world building.

Obviously we still need to do a lot more than just this: What's the goal of the game? What kind of quests? Jobs/careers? It's very overwhelming -- which is why we work in chunks. :)


I think we have indirectly settled on an island for our immediate location, no?

I say we start on the very beach that we all worked to build the past few days as demos. There's no reason to throw it out as it fits into our world quite well (which is the reason I chose that setting). We can branch out from the shore into the city/town, the forests, and so forth.

So, let's begin.

  • What kind of climate should the island have?
    I went with a dreary, less-than-tropical island similar to Blecki's story posted on the original thread. I think this is an ideal climate for our island, and fits the theme well. Alternative options?
  • What are some staple buildings and locations in the town?
    Church, the harbor, a hospital, town hall, grocery store... Let's compile a list of every building in the city that the player will be able to walk in.
  • Just outside town?
    Forested areas. Is farming viable on an island like this? What kind?
  • Where does the player start? Maybe there should be alternative starting locations?
  • What's on the other side of the island? Can you follow the shoreline all the way around?
  • Is the island mountainous, hilly, or just flat forests? Any unique landmarks?
    Caverns, old ruins, abandoned homes.

@piggybankcowboy You've been doing some research on islands like this, correct? What kind of things have you learned? Anything you can share is welcomed! I suggest everyone helps out, of course.

If we can answer these questions and get a list of buildings in the town, we have an amazing starting point to begin writing out the actual game world.

TASK TWO: WIKI

I will contribute to this task as soon as I have time, but if someone else could start that would be great. For now, just a list of all the buildings we settle on will be ideal, with links to their pages (they can be blank). Another page that compiles all the other information about the island would be ideal as well.

The wiki is going to be insanely helpful in organizing our world -- git issue threads are not going to work out in the long run.
