Identify / allow configuration of client # of Columns

Some things just don't look very nice when the client width is different than what we expect:

• Word wrapping splitting words in bad spots
• Map alignment:

I understand how we could use this to implement word-wrap. (Do people really use clients that don't support that??) Is there anyway we could implement the opposite for clients that don't scroll horizontally?
