I think you can just use python. In you code, although you implement in shell, you still curl module. It is the same as PHP do. Try python urllib2, this feature will engage you. Trust me.

I just have a look on you python code, there are some advices given by me. If you can define some function, it will make your code clearer. This is beneficial to new students.
