pipe does not work properly

Hey ,
I tried searched for a pattern using Ack 
Then I ran 
Cdo %s/<pattern>/someting/ge | update
For some reason it just updates only one file not all of them but subsitues in all of them 
I can get around this using Cdo update but just thought of bringing it up.
