With #871 allowing experiment users to create and share templates in the interface, there may be less need to edit experiments in the templates directory.

Yes, I think the goal should be to get rid of the templates directory completely and only have interface-created templates. (It may take a while to migrate existing directory templates as some include features not available in the UI, but we can set a standard moving forward that researchers should push UI support for anything they need in their templates.)
