Adaptive SQM: Cellular/5G congestion learning mode

Hey! I also just tried adaptive SQM but despite setting the option for my cellular WAN (non-primary), it doesn't get detected.

Is it a U-LTE or U5G-Max? I don't have those currently supported as I haven't tested it on GRE tunnels. I also worry about racking up people's data usage with the twice-daily speed tests. Those use up to 1 GB each time eek.

It is the U5G-Max. That's a concern that is fair enough. I got a large enough data limit that I feel comfortable to give it a try. It's ok though if it isn't supported yet.

On that note, are there also instructions to uninstall the adaptive SQM scripts?

When orphaned scripts are detected the remove option would be available. If there's an error rolling out, it cleans up after itself too. What are you seeing in the status and the deploy options and output?

Oh I mean UDM Boot install, not the SQM scripts.

Oh that's completely harmless to have there. But if you want to remove it, it's a matter of removing the system service and then the on boot directory under /data

Just noting it down in case I ever need to clean it up. Cool if it's that easy. What's the name of the service again?

Also it would be nice if it could eventually support cellular. It would be the perfect use case as the speeds vary a lot during the day depending on how busy the tower is. Faster speeds at night and worse speeds in the afternoon.

I think now that I have the custom Cloudflare speed test binary where I can ensure it keeps the test brief and data usage to a minimum, I will be working on support for GRE connections in Adaptive SQM soon.

I'd give it a week given my velocity on features.

In 1.5.2, the Adaptive SQM page does detect the GRE interface!

Although the Speed Range is too narrow compared to my actual experience and just 2 speed tests a day probably cannot capture the huge swings in speed cellular is capable of throughout the day. Looking forward to the planned updates to Adaptive SQM!

How bad are the swings? I was looking at this today without enabling it on my gre1, and it looks like it would apply a congestion profile that would account for like 166-350 Mbps. Pretty wide variance. Although for mobile networks, the usage / congestion patterns will be different.

The problem with speed testing is it'll always impact traffic, so it's hard to say how many actual speed tests are optimal.

Was the ping-based adjustment catching any swings? That should really be congestion-dependent on cellular.

In my experience, in the after download speeds can get as low as 30 Mbps while it gets all the way to 220 Mbps at night.

Upload speed incredible as well, with swings from 20 Mbps down to 5 Mbps.

(Yes, UK mobile networks are terrible. It's insane.)

Ping generally doesn't swing that much. Maybe a user configurable speed test interval?
