There's a bunch of parts to this

  • Store player inventory proxy-side in short term ram and long term database/filesystem.
  • Control what player sees when they open inventory, control what happens when player interacts in their inventory such as moving items around and crafting.
  • Likely communicate through server-side plugin for things like what they are currently holding, when they throw items, when the player drops items on death, what a player is supposed to see in chests and interacting with items in them and other blocks with storage inside them.

Controlling tags, recipes, and server-side plugin development are probably prerequisites.
