On KDE Neon (Ubuntu) Wayland: Need to set SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11

Game installed (via .sh file) and starts up as expected.
However, I had really bad performance problems, in the main menu I had around 15-20 FPS.

Solved by adding SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 to the .desktop file.

Is that something that should be part of the default .desktop file created by the installer?

I am on KDE Neon (an Ubuntu derivative), latest version, using a Wayland session.

No. The defaults are meant to work on most systems. A lot of distros have dropped X11, and some of them are Wayland only (no XWayland).

Therefore, leaving the default as undefined (SDL will choose to use Wayland or X11 depending on the availability of one or the other) is the sane option for maximum compatibility.

You are free to send adjust the configuration based on your system's specifics after installation.
