AndroidKotlin: releases and Android Studio built apk behave differently

AndroidKotlin: releases and Android Studio built apk behave differently in Nexus5X 7.1.1

https://github.com/OWASP/MSTG-Hacking-Playground/releases/download/1.0/MSTG-Android-Kotlin.apk
does not show the Login or Register Activity.

But the Android Studio built version is showing a login and register Activity.

Also for the releases apk
SharedPreferencesImplementation does not work as expected. An xml file is not present.

Please let me know if more information is needed.
