Hi, I've been playing the game without issue for about ~130 hours in the last month on Script Extender v29.

The last time I successfully launched the game was today (February 6th, 2026) at around 5PM.

Since then, all attempts to launch the game with the Script Extender present has been met with the error message in the title.

My friend, with whom I am playing co-op, can launch the game without issue. He is able to verify his script extender is correctly installed via:

Before I saw this screenshot from him, I was frantically attempting to retrace all of my steps in my modding process, trying to see if something went wrong.

• I nuked all but the "Data" folder in my game installation, verified files, nuked the AppData folder, reinstalled BG3MM- essentially starting over.
• I tried reinstalling some prerequisites, though neither on the github page nor the nexusmods page, any specific prerequisites that make Script Extender work are listed; and the Troubleshooting documentation on this page is inaccessible at the moment

My game works in any and all configurations, except if Script Extender is installed- then I cannot launch the game. My friend can launch the game. I'm no expert user by any means but I did some level of troubleshooting on my end to believe this isn't an issue on my end at this present moment.

I can't launch the game even if it's just Script Extender + 0 total mods in the Mods folder.

I'm going to have this page pinned on my browser and will try to remain in correspondence if I can help you help me at any point, but seeing how your troubleshooting, readme, this, that, and everything else is borked makes me believe this is an update gone wrong; I don't think reinstalling vcredists on my end or reinstalling the script extender or clearing x y z folder is going to help me. I'd love to get my script extender in working order whenever possible. Thank you for your efforts.

I have the same 1114 error. But I'm still on Release 29. Thank you for creating report, will follow this thread and would also be grateful for advice.

I can confirm i just tried to launch the game and im having the same issue. I tried to disable updates in the JSON file but it still breaks at launch. both Direct X and Vulkan (from the larian launcher) :(

I got the game to run! i followed the steps to install SE locally by downloading the version .29 and replacing DWrite.dll

HOWEVER, the game opens but all mods are disabled :( so. win some/lose some idk

Okay, closed the game and reloaded it and all mods worked...no idea what im doing but it seems version 29 seems to work when you do the manual install and disable updating.

Hi, how did you download version .29 specifically? I only see the option to download and extract the ZIP from April 2024.

Going back to v29 isn't helping me. (I believe NexusMods is still hosting v29, but I may be wrong) I think it's automatically updating to v30. I recall finding another thread where the author mentions you can disable updates. #547 (comment)

Unfortunately they don't mention where ScriptExtenderUpdaterConfig.json actually is, whether it generates with an install of ScriptExtender or if it's more akin to ScriptExtenderSettings.json, only generating if settings are tweaked...

Anyhow- even a power tool like Voidtools Everything wasn't locating it. So I could only assume to create the file myself with the appropriate text inside, where the other similar file ScriptExtenderSettings.json is... but that didn't work.

I urge everyone to be verbose while discussing issues and solutions, so we leave as little useful information unevoked and create as little misunderstanding as possible.

I disabled updates by finding the file ScriptExtenderUpdaterConfig.json in the bin folder

download that, extract with 7zip and then follow the instructions to install local.

Would you be so kind as to elaborate further? I've not seen any instructions on how to install the contents of the zip I was able to acquire from the link. This is not the standard DWrite.dll, so I am not sure where it's meant to go, and I'm not sure where to read up on where it's meant to go, either.

I would like to add to this as well. I have two pc's (one is old but still runs so my friend uses it to play when she visits). Both pc's are running the exact same mods as we are currently going through a multiplayer campaign as well as our own single player.

I am getting the same failure to launch due to script extender. It works on my newer pc but not the old one. If it helps i can include computer specs or any data you need. I've tried all the same troubleshooting steps as above.

Hello, I disabled Script Extender auto-updates in BG3 Mod Manager using the advice from people above. The problem is that even with auto-updates disabled, and even when I manually install a specific version of the Script Extender into the bin folder, the game still crashes on launch.

I also changed Script Extender versions directly in the Mod Manager. After these changes, a ScriptExtenderUpdaterConfig.json file appeared, which also states that auto-updates are disabled. I tried various combinations of selecting versions and downloading the same versions manually from the website, but nothing helped.

I would be very grateful for detailed help with this issue. Thank you.

Windows 10, i7 4820k. Installing that did not resolve the issue. I am still unable to run v30.

Very similar experience to me and my co-op friend. He's got a very up to date "NASA PC", I've got an oldie and goldie from 2014. I am unable to run v30, but he can. Having older hardware definitely seems to contribute.

Ahhh, so you need to enable mod developer mode to get that elusive updater tab!... I wish that was mentioned before in other threads I visited. I was able to secure v29 and get my game to launch! Thank you very much.
