WebAlign: What do the "save" and "approve" buttons do?

WebAlign currently has a "save" button and an "approve" button. I am unsure what their functions are, and why two buttons are provided? This is confusing for users.

Save stores data into the bucket. It's a topic for discussion if it should happen automatically and when - right now it's easy to lose work by forgetting to press this button before switching to a different app.
Approve okays the currently visible section (sets alignment status to green).
