Investigate better naming of objects in test code

I think it would really help understanding, if there is an inline comment or doc string describing what is meant by subject (for clarity).

Also, there's a repeating pattern in some tests that can be made simpler if we add some utility (mainly around capturing a list of calls that create many nigh-identical lines of test code).
