well, i have polish locales and date is returned like '42 years ago'
getResources returns timestamp format, not affected by locales
getRelated return text formatted date

Assuming [[+publishedon]] returns something like "Mar 3 2012 15:41", just [[+publishedon:ago]] should work, at least based on the ago output filters' code...
