Create an installer

The solution needs an installer for the client that does the following:

1. Installs the OrgPortal monitor
2. Adds the OrgPortal monitor to the list of apps that automatically run when the user logs into the client device
3. Installs the OrgPortal WinRT app (or writes a .req file into the correct AppData folder to get the OrgPortal monitor to do the work)

It might also need to unlock PowerShell so the OrgPortal monitor can run PowerShell commands, but I'm not sure if that is necessary.

Alternately, instead of a Wix installer, maybe we should use ClickOnce to deploy the OrgPortal monitor app, and once it is installed it can automatically install the OrgPortal WinRT app?

My thoughts ClickOnce would be a better approach for end users - ie they could simply go to a web page and click to install instead of having to know to download the MSI - (let alone patching etc).

The only concern I have is about security, I assume it would have to be a Full Trust application given the need to run powershell from the app, and install the WinRT app?

Also - generally ClickOnce manifest are signed - so issue of using a Cert and passwords.

I agree that ClickOnce is probably the best answer.

The OrgPortalMonitor app (on first run?) would need to

1. Install the corporate root cert (if not already installed)
2. Provide a way for the user to access and/or activate the unlock key for their device
3. Trigger the auto-install of the OrgPortal WinRT app (though this might be handled by Auto-update apps #3 anyway)
4. Install the side-loading key as per Add functionality to install side-loading activation key in system tray app #7

The Desktop system tray app could bootstrap the installation of the WinRT app by writing an install request into the folder it monitors for install requests, thus triggering a normal install process.

I’d think our build process should perhaps create the Desktop system tray app’s ClickOnce installer package into a folder in the web app, and there should be a non-admin web page in the web site that end users could use to run the installer?
