About Me

I'm a postdoctoral researcher working at the Argelander Institufür Astronomie (AIfA) in Bonn, Germany.
I'm interested in how drastic events like galaxy mergers and active galactic nuclei change how galaxies evolve,
with a particular focus on resolving how these events influence how galaxies convert gas into stars.
I am also a strong advocate for scientific literacy and astronomy outreach - understanding how to communicate complex scientific ideas to the public,
and engaging non-experts with the scientific process, is as crucial as the scientific research we pursue!

What influence do galaxy mergers have on the ISM and star-forming properties of their constituents?
Galaxies experience extreme transformation when they gravtationally interact with another galaxy, especially if the two galaxies are of similar size.
My PhD work focused on understanding how those changes were reflected on the kpc-scale, using the MaNGA survey to examine how the chemical composition of the ISM and local star formation rates change as an interaction progresses and the two galaxies coalesce.
Modern multiwavelength surveys are allowing us to expand this work at even higher resolution, probing the star-forming process on the scale of individual HII regions and molecular clouds.

Science-literacy is the best way to help our communities address complex problems and make informed decisions, and its the job of educators and science professionals to reach out and cultivate an understanding and appreciation for science.
I am an ardent advocate for science and astronomy outreach: to connect with audiences young and old about the wonders of space, as well as the importance of scientific scrutiny.
Everyone connects with scientific ideas differently, and I’ve endeavored to create opportunities for engagement outside the university classroom.
Be it hosting planetarium shows or side-walk star parties, presenting in pubs for Astro on Tap or out in a field with the telescopes ready.

I often give lectures and more kid-friendly astronomy activities to educational groups, if you’d like me to come and meet with your group feel free to contact me.
In the past I’ve spoken at the historic Theodor Jacobsen Observatory in Seattle, the University of Victoria, the University of Cambridge, the Royal BC Museum and more
