_sync_helpers.py extraction is still WIP. PR #319 is marked [WIP] in the commit message. At 958 LOC it is the largest file in src/ and may still evolve. Until the PR is finalized and merged cleanly, the module boundary between sync.py and _sync_helpers.py remains subject to change.
