More robust but not very insightful answer... It seems like the hardware back button doesn't function in the app at all. I've tested a bunch of other places and it doesn't seem to do anything, anywhere.

I haven't been able to reproduce this on anroid 9 or 7.0 Just kidding. This is tricky to reproduce.
