This seems to be because of the annotation of the pattern before processing. I have yet to come across a pattern that has only crosses that didn't translate properly. Thankfully the majority of the patterns consist of only crosses. The pattern in the example above is from chapter 9 and more patterns from that chapter have the same problem.
