Voting time friends! Here we choose the first game this community will take on.
The Games:
1. Realm Action-Adventure
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1292621908646297722
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/126IMx89X5GYFDA3A-wJzdO3GKEO5P4tCpMqmzZ5FPmY/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
Topdown 2D action-adventure hack-and-slash game with magic in which comets fall from the sky and land in the the overworld and each comet leads to a completely different 'realm' area whose landscape is procedurally generated with its own unique set of challenges, enemies, weapons, items, boss, environment, etc and each realm falls in random order so each playthrough could involve different realms, different layout of those realms since they are procedural, and even if the same realms appear on different playthroughs they will be in a different order and have different difficulty. The idea would be to have the game be continuously expandable by letting the community continue to add new realms to the game indefinitely, if desired.
The story is that after going to investigate one of the fallen comets, and getting transported to the realm before making your way back out, upon returning home in the overworld the player finds out some friends and family have been taken by creatures from the realms. The protagonist decides to go out in search of realms to save their friends and family. Some of the realms progress the story, while the others don't and are more random, and so the player must progress through the realms to save their loved ones and find out why the realms are appearing in the first place.
Magic would be a key component of the game, and there may be a crafting mechanic as well. There is also the concept of "realm essence" which you get upon beating each realm, with harder realms giving the player more powerful essence, and these can be used to acquire more powerful abilities. Because the realms can be totally different there can be a huge and interesting variety of types of weapons, armor, loot, spells, etc that the player can obtain throughout the game.
2. BeatBreaker - Rhythm-based roguelite
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1293468478405218304
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MSsqoD4LNIcQIRtvjqtx_tpFPVukCkIFCW6ulFL_YTY/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
A rogue-lite action game where the twist is the combat is dictated by the beat of music you create as you go!
Each run the player starts with an empty beat sheet, but as you progress you get items that give you unique beats in specific positions of the rhythm so you build out your beat-weaponry as each run progresses. Each item introduces new beats that gives the player combat abilities like attacks, dodges, and special abilities. The beats are locked into place in your chorus of combat as you obtain them so the player is able to build a different rhythm strategy on each run. On death, you lose your beats and start back from the beginning with an empty beat sheet. Between creating different combat beat rhythms and the procedurally generated levels/items/enemies, each run offers a unique play experience.
Collect rhythm items, adapt to your evolving music, and see how far your beat can take you! Your beat sheet not only determines combat but also shapes the game’s evolving soundtrack, immersing you in a world of sound and action. In BeatBreaker, it's not just about fighting—it's about crafting your own rhythm and mastering the music of battle. Can you keep the beat alive?
3. Lost Pilot - outer space ship-builder / action game
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1294013260961419295
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18r1ZKYDm0KG1rGi0q6tt84x3eUxJRQ-26AGyFGrG7yY/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
Part ship-builder, part topdown 2D action game, you play as a ship captain leading a crew of four who have narrowly escaped a devastating space battle. Severely damaged, your ship's malfunctioning instant transportation device lands you far from home, in a desolate region filled with abandoned space stations and wrecked ships. With damaged weapons and barely enough fuel, your mission shifts to survival and finding a way back home.
To succeed, you must explore derelict stations, gather resources, and upgrade your crew and ship. As you journey through hostile environments, you'll face aliens, robots (possibly even an alien-robot-dragon with flamethrowers cuz who knows what lies in perilous depths of space!), and other dangers, requiring strategic upgrades to both your crew's combat abilities and your ship’s capabilities to make it back safely.
Lead your crew, each with their own attributes and abilities that can help you in your quest for salvation, as you combat and investigate your way through the haunting specter of the technological remnants of spacefaring society in order to build and manage your inventory to repair and upgrade your ship and survive that dangers that lurk in the void.
Embark on this outer space adventure as the lost pilot and hack your way into space stations, fight pirates and other creatures too violent and strange to live anywhere other than in the darkness of space, all while managing your resources and the state and layout of your ship so that you and your crew don't end up as nothing but meaty hunks of space debris on the outer limits of cosmic civilization!
4. Online Multiplayer Fantasy Raid game
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1292905828826873856
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ONtDJQgAfgCF3O_uwpHns5-iSVGiLxWWzqc2DNwqorM/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
Comfy PVP co-op game with procedurally generated dungeons. Meant to be evocative of the classic WOW days pre-corpo garbage. Classic MMORPG base feature set, but with a focus on progression as a team. Complete with a branching fantasy class system that leads to different character talent sets and play styles, classic (probably 2D) dungeon crawling with a variety of enemies/bosses/loot, and detailed character creation.
5. Side-scrolling Melee Action RPG
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1293294903337553990
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BPuiRzpEbekQHFse2IazttPhgavzAj2mxb59hJg3AnY/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
An action RPG with a focus on movement and combat. The game switches between a top-down overworld that emphasizes exploration, and side-scrolling action screens which emphasize combat. The side-scrolling part is where most of the game will take place. Players gain EXP by defeating enemies, which can be spent to improve stats or buy magic abilities. In the overworld, players will discover towns, dungeons and other locations to find secrets, advance the story, etc.
Think Zelda 2, but with modern advances and quality of life improvements, and an intense focus on combat and movement to elicit a highly skill-based experience in which average players can level up to succeed while expert players can get through on their wits alone!
A key focus of the game being that playing with skill is highly satisfying, with combat being challenging but fair, and providing a variety of different combat experiences. Levels will be hand-crafted rather than generated. An art style more along the lines of hand-drawn rather than pixel art and the unique and challenging skill-based combat will set this game apart from the crowd.
6. Dragon Lord - a real-time combat pokemon-like dragon catching and training action game
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1292621977290276894
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hUPqhgOq_xguzw-MLYQhpNOXhk8zwE2Of_8rlzV2lSA/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
A top-down roguelite, where you build your own dragon 'farm' by venturing into a procedurally generated world to find, tame and train dragons.
Venture out from your base into successive large procedurally generated rooms with branching paths on your search for a variety of dragons to catch and train and to take out fighting with you so you can progress further through the game. When you die you lose all your resources collected on that run, but if you make it back to your base alive you stock your base with all the loot and dragons you picked up on your run. Between each run you prepare at your base for the next run, and you can build out your base and use your collected resources to heal and strengthen your dragons, and even make nests for them so they can lay eggs to grow your dragon collection!
Grow and train your dragon collection as each scaly beast grows from Egg to Kid to Youngling to Adult. Select which dragons to accompany you on each run as you direct them through basic command actions to keep you alive through combat filled rooms and to overcome environmental obstacles. Numerous unique dragon types open up the strategic combat and progression options available to the player. Become the dragon lord in this intense Wyrm-filled mix of combat and creature-raising mechanics!
7. Inverse-progression Tower Magic roguelite
Discord chat: https://discord.com/channels/1292350811007094898/1292622624949800971
Game Design Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y-VRIBgjnpA86orPRfob6j2AhkKtHZHkBHn4npOn1s8/edit?usp=sharing
Summary:
An elemental magic 2D side-scrolling roguelite action-platformer where you have to make it up (or down) a tower where each floor is an intense level of magical combat. Progress through the tower in sets of levels where each set is several levels in which you have to sacrifice an elemental magic power at the start of each level and the enemies of that level gain your sacrificed magical powers. At the end of each set of levels, before you make it back to a safe zone / magic-regeneration floor, you fight a boss powered by the magics you sacrificed! Back up your elemental magics with basic arcane magical powers and your wieldy staff.
Strategize over which magic types to sacrifice as you make your way through the procedurally generated levels. Every run is different and when you die you're back at the start of the tower. But fear not, tower-mage, for each run allows you to unlock permanent upgrades and discover new combinations of elements as you go so that you may eventually conquer the tower!
