I guess the commit link is not very helpful. For instance, if a release only includes 1 commit (compared to the last release), it tries to compare that single commit to itself, yielding the GH page:

There isn’t anything to compare.
You’ll need to use two different branch names to get a valid comparison.
Check out some of these sample comparisons.

I guess what should really be done, is to use the previous commit for the comparison. Text itself however, would be okay.
