Adding a Georeferenced Map in ArcGIS Online Using a Tile Layer URL

Step 1: Copy the Map Tiles URL

Copy the “Map Tiles URL” from the bottom of the details view for the georeferenced map you’re interested in.

Step 2: Open ArcGIS Online

  1. Go to ArcGIS Online

  2. Sign in to your account.

Step 3: Open Map Viewer

  1. Click Map in the top navigation menu.

  2. This will open Map Viewer in a new tab.

Step 4: Add a Layer from the Web

In the New Map Viewer:

  1. Click Add (usually a “+” button on the left panel).

  2. Select Add layer from URL.

In Map Viewer Classic (if applicable):

  1. Click Add in the top toolbar.

  2. Select Add Layer from Web.

Step 5: Paste the Map Tiles URL

  1. Paste the copied Map Tiles URL into the URL field.

  2. For the layer type, choose Tile Layer.

  3. Click Next and enter Title and Attribution for the map layer.

  4. Click Add to map.

Step 6: Navigate to the Map Location

After the layer loads:

  • The map may not automatically zoom to the correct location.

  • If needed, manually pan and zoom to the geographic area of the map.

If you’re unsure where the map is located, refer to the map's position within the Historic Map Explorer and manually navigate to that area in ArcGIS Online.

Optional: Save the Map

  1. Click Save.

  2. Choose Save As if creating a new web map.

  3. Enter a title, tags, and summary.

  4. Click Save.
