I've removed C24, but not C27 (on my "white buttons" v3 PCB). I haven't yet tried writing the flash, but reading it (I was hoping to back up the stock firmware -- just being cautious and trying to avoid bricking my uSDX :) ) gives me back an empty file (or full of 0xFF if I use avrdude -A). I'm using a USBasp.

Is the presence C27 the cause of this issue, or is it something else?

I think it would be nice to clarify this comment for the benefit of people who are doing this for the first time and aren't feeling confident :)
