No build instructions, and guessing on this: ./config-builds fails with multiple errors on Fedora 38 and Debian

Someone told me to run config-builds, but I got errors, and so did my expert friend on recent debian machine.

Code looks good, but I need more comments and much more detailed, more basic level README's. :)

I guess if this works than I have to run do-build, which currently fails on ninja error.

The short version is that you should only need to use add_subdirectory(path/to/felspar-exceptions) and then add felspar-exceptions to your target_link_libraries.

I don't understand any short version if it relates to cmake. So, I have no idea on how to build your library or even find the source code. I need clear basic level readmes. Here is the output of ./config-buildsZ:

OK, it looks like the gcc release and debug builds configured fine, as did the clang debug one, but cmake wasn't able to work out how to use your clang 16 configuration. This is trying to use libc++ so it's most likely the problem is there. But if you only really care about gcc then you have those configured.

You can try:

ninja -C build.tmp/gcc-debug all felspar-check

That should do the build and run the tests. You can also try the gcc-release folder and that should also work.

Doing ninja -C build.tmp/gcc-release install will give you a dist folder. I see that I'm not including this library's headers in that output. Let me fix that and I'll be right back....

OK, I've just pushed a small change that should give you all of the headers and libraries that you need need in the relevant dist folder. Adding the include folder and library folder to the relevant paths in your build system should be enough

I think this is the key line in the output:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lc++: No such file or directory

It looks like you don't also have libc++ installed on the machine, and the script uses it because I'm trying to test as many configurations as I can. If you don't care about clang then I wouldn't worry about it as your gcc build is succeeding. If you do care about clang then you'll need to install the libc++ packages. On debian these seem to be dependent on the clang version, so you can only have a single clang with libc++ installed at a time.

Something like:

sudo apt install libc++-deb libc++-abi-dev

Should do it, but you may also need libunwind-dev, and if the clang you installed is not the default one you may also need to add the correct version numbers to the packages for clang-16 (which is what it looks like you're using).

I think we're letting ourselves get into a load of complicated stuff here for no real reason. The project builds using the standard cmake tooling. You can read about ways to customise the build here: https://cmake.org/runningcmake/

But, these steps should work for you with your default platform builds on Unix like platforms:

git clone git@github.com:Felspar/exceptions.git
cd exceptions/
mkdir build.tmp
cmake ..
make
sudo make install

This will install to /usr/local. To customise the install location you can look at https://cmake.org/cmake/help/latest/variable/CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX.html

The tests can be run using the felspar-check build target: make felspar-check
