In the past months and during the last DIIP meetups, we have been discussing the potential move of the DIIP profile to the OpenWallet Foundation. The objectives would be to get more global visibility, align better with relating initiatives (incl other profiles and testbeds) and benefit from supporting tools and services. This should result in increased maturity of the profile + more global adoption and implementations. A sustainable place for the future of this profile.
DIF (Decentralized Identity Foundation), W3C and OIDF (OpenID Foundation) were also considered as options. However, since DIIP includes specs from each of these SDO's it seem to make sense to look for a neutral space (which OWF should be).
As agreed in DIIP Meetup#28 (January 29th) Harmen and Samuel would reach out to OWF to discuss the possibilities.
In past weeks we had discussions on this with Sean Bohen and Daniel Goldscheider from OWF. Both were are welcoming the DIIP community if we decide for this move. The potential move of DIIP to OWF was also mentioned in the OWF Discord and SiG meetings. So far, only positive feedback. Today Sean, Samuel and me had another meeting to discuss more details.
Our conclusion: we think that this will be a good move for DIIP.
In the upcoming DIIP meetup#29, Thursday February 26th 16:30 CET we have invited Sean.
During the meeting he will explain what OWF can offer to the DIIP profile & community. After that we can have an open discussion and Q&A on this topic. After this meeting we will post a poll on the DIIP Github to vote Yes/No for the move to OWF. The poll we be open for a week. In case the majority votes Yes, we will further arrange the move with Sean and aim for the March or April DIIP meetup to continue under the "OWF umbrella".
If there are any questions, comments on topic, just respond to this message or join the upcoming meetup.
Looking forward to taking DIIP to the next level.
Harmen
