2.0 "What's New" Dialog #1214

Description

Details

With the 2.0 release, we need to bring in an explainer so people can easily access what new features have been added.

Content for this dialog in the 2.0 release has not been fully determined, but will include:

  • updated methods for calculating map demographic values
  • removed demographic data from eviction lab data downloads (direct users to census instead)
  • introduction of the confidence interval feature (map cards, data table, line chart, bar chart, rankings)
  • anything else new in 2.0

The visual style of the content within the dialog has not yet been completed, but should utilize the style used for other dialog windows on the site (see About page or export dialog on the map page).

Current Status

Functionality of how the user triggers this has not yet been determined, but some options have been discussed:

  • automatically pop up the "what's new" dialog if the user has not previously seen it
  • add a notifier in the header that the user can click to open the modal (similar to slack, see image below)
    • maybe use the "2.0" indicator on the logo for this with a "What's new" tooltip hint
    • will need some special mobile consideration

Next Steps

  • where the trigger to open the dialog will be, and whether it will exist site-wide or only on specific pages (@james-minton)
  • wireframe / rough mockup what this trigger looks like (@sashasashasasha)
  • provide initial draft of content for this dialog
  • prototype implementation
  • team / client review
  • revisions (if any)
  • PR review
  • add to release and launch 🎉
