Took a peek at a what a merge or rebase would look like and "not great" is my initial conclusion. Is this fork supposed to be hard or is the hope at some point to reintegrate with/replace the HF version?

there is a new branch dev_main that is synced with upstream candle from HF. it has the new FP8 and so far is working great. hopefully we can get the fp8 stuff merged in to main.
